Dr, Symonds led a Civil War Trust tour on September 22, 2012, of The Mariners Museum and then on Hampton Roads, where he described the March 1862 clash of the CSS Virginia and the USS Monitor.
Dr. Symonds in 2005 was appointed professor emeritus of the history department at the United States Naval Academy. Chairing this Department from 1988 - 1992, he is also a distinguished historian of the American Civil War.
He is the author of many books, including the acclaimed "Lincoln and His Admirals: Abraham Lincoln, the U.S. Navy, and the Civil War" (Oxford University Press, 2008).
The Civil War Trust boat tour with Dr. Symonds covered the events of March 8-9,1862, on Hampton Roads in Virginia, as the CSS Virginia confronted the USS Monitor, beginning "The Ironclad Revolution" in world naval warfare.
