Summary

Description
English: Dirty Dick's This pub in Bishopsgate has a long history. It was originally called The Jerusalem but at some point it was renamed after an eccentric C18 warehouseman, one Richard, or Nathaniel, Bentley. After his fiancee died the night before their wedding (it is said that Dickens modelled Mrs Haversham on him) he allowed himself and his business to fall into neglect and decay to such an extent that a parcel addressed to 'Dirty Dick, London' would be delivered to his premises close by. The pub benefited from the notoriety and for many years retained a display of dirty dishes, cobwebs and dead cats to illustrate the story.
