Summary

Description
English: Devon & Cornwall Bank building, South Molton, Devon. The Plymouth & Devonport Banking Company was established in 1832 as a joint-stock company at Plymouth in Devon, and having developed a wide branch network across the south-west, it changed its name to the Devon & Cornwall Banking Company. It was acquired in 1906 by Lloyds Bank, which was in need of a branch network in the south-west, and remains a branch-office of Lloyds in 2017. On the facade are displayed from left to right: arms of Courtenay, Earls of Devon; the arms of the Corporation of Plymouth; the Duchy of Cornwall; sculpted text above: "Established 1832" above which in the pediment are shown the arms of the Borough of South Molton. Behind the modern signage of "Lloyds Bank" is visible the vestige of the former signage "Devon & Cornwall Bank". Architecture: the awkward mini pediment above is strange and detracts from the overall composition. By convention it should have stretched along the entire front of the building. Was it reduced to its somewhat absurdly small size due to cost cutting? Might have been better eliminated entirely.
