Description
Deutsch: Schlacht bei Arbedo 1422
English: Battle of Arbedo (1422) in the depiction of the Lucerne chronicle (1513). The Swiss Confederates are shown as marching under their cantonal flags (Lucerne, Uri, Unterwalden, Zug), with the white cross attached to their garments. Reinforcements of Schwyz are shown arriving in the top left, with a red triangular flag showing the white cross, and the cantonal flag of Schwyz visible at the top right of the left panel.

The troops of Schwyz were too late to participate in the battle. Even further behind, and not shown in the image, were the reinforcements sent by Zürich. The Uristier blowing the Harschhorn (blowing horn) is shown, wearing the bull horns, alongside the horn blowers of Lucerne and Zug. All three men are wearing the Swiss degen, and holding polearms in their right hands, the men of Lucerne and Zug are holding halberds, while the halberd drawn for the Uristier was apparently revised to instead represent a spear.

The Milanese troops are wearing red crosses as emblems. They are shown as fighting under the banner of condottiere Facino Cane (a dog rampant, holding an inescutcheon with a Savoy cross (later attested as a red-on-white cross[1]).

This may be an anachronism on the part of Schilling, as Cane died in 1412, and the actual condottiere at Arbedo was Francesco Bussone, who had, however, himself long served under Cane. The ducal flag of Milan is also shown, but obscured by the folding page.
