d: Heart disease 10 Hernia 11 Hydrocele 2 Acute Synovitis 1 (2%) - 27 The parents of the boys who were in need of medical, surgical ordental attention were notified of the fact by letter and general advicewas given as to the best methods of treatment. Return cards wereenclosed to be mailed to this office telling what had been done in eachcase. Where no response was received a second follow-up letterwas sent. On many occasions parents and adults present at theexamination expressed their hearty approval of the procedure ofhaving a physician see that the competitors were in good physicalcondition before being allowed to run the race. Almost every heart, hernia, hydrocele, undescended testis, the mostserious defects, were unknown to the boy or parent until discoveredby this department. The response to treatment has been very encouraging, consideringthe fact that no actual attempt except by letter was made. In 04individual cases, 15 boys (15.95%) are already reported as havingbeen treated.
