The image is the subject of sourced critical commentary: Chris Owens portrayl of The Smoking Man is the main focus of the episode, and as such, a picture of him and Samantha Mulder concisely explains the plot better than words. The casting of Owens is elaborated in the "Production" section. Owens performance was praised by critics, elaborated in the "Reception" section. Furthermore, the shot illustrates the unique filming method that was used to make the flashback sequences. The negative of the film was hit with a strobe effect and the colors were contrasted. The shutter of the camera was also adjusted to give the image and finished film an uneasy effect. This is elaborate in the "Production" section and is difficult to adequately describe in words alone.
