Samples can be collected from a variety of different environments using appropriate collection techniques. DNA is then prepared and used to answer a variety of ecological questions: metabarcoding is used to answer questions about ‘who’ is present, while the function of communities or individuals can be established using a metagenomics, single‐cell genomics or metatranscriptomics‐ see text for full details.
