Summary

Description
English: Datura metel 'Fastuosa' - extreme close-up of the base of a fallen flower (showing calyx, 2 corollas & pistil) following their abcission, after pollination, caused by the 'setting' of a viable fruit. Note the base of the purple-black pistil with brown abcission scar. The shedding of the pistil at the same time as the corolla and calyx, as seen here, is rather unusual: often the abcissed corollas and calyx will slide off the persistent pistil, which remains attached to the newly-set fruit. Equally often, the pistil may actually remain attached to the fruit as it develops, the pistil drying and turning brown as it does so. Note also the abcissed vascular bundles, visible as darker patches, particularly on the base of the inner corolla, but also on the base of the outer corolla and the (purple-striated and yellowed) calyx. These vascular bundle scars correspond to those on the corresponding rings of tissue at the base of the young fruit (not shown in this image). Note further three of the greenish corolla ribs / vascular bundles, visible on the interior of the inner corolla.
