Deutsch: Das Wappen wurde am 17. September 1929 vom preußischen Staatsministerium verliehen. Schlägel und Eisen erinnern an den früheren Bergbau in der Stadt. Die Wolfsangeln entstammen dem Wappen der Herren von Brabeck, ehemalige Besitzer von Schloss Wittringen.
English: The arms were granted on September 17, 1929. Hammer and pick symbolise the former coal mining; the three wolf hooks are derived from the arms of the Lords of Brabeck, who lived for many centuries on the Wittringen castle.
