Mr. Phillips was killed in the Benin Massacre on January 4 1897 shortly after he took up his office as Acting Consul General and as such, very few photographs of him exist for this point in his life.

It is important for the articles on the Benin Massacre and Benin Expeditions of 1897. Mr. Phillips was a key person in these historical events. His visual identification is important for the narratives.
