Summary

Description
English: An image illustrating the most obvious difference between the West and Central Asian Physochlaina orientalis (M. Bieb.) G.Don and the Central to East Asian / Siberian Physochlaina physaloides (L.) G.Don : the ripe fruiting calyx of P. orientalis ( on the Left ) is quite rigid, with calyx lobes quite sharp - resembling a squat, pyriform version of the fruiting calyx of the related genus Hyoscyamus; while the ripe fruiting calyx of P. physaloides (on the Right), by contrast is more inflated and flexible, having a softer, papery or membranaceous texture reminiscent of the fruiting calyces of the familiar genus Physalis - whence the specific name 'physaloides' ( 'Physalis-like' ). This point of difference is also reflected in the Russian common names of the plants, that of P. orientalis being simply Puzeernitsa (= 'Bubblewort' / 'Bladder plant' ), while that of P. physaloides is Puzeernitsa Phizalisovaya (= 'Physalis-like Bubblewort').

The P. physaloides calyx (on the Right) is smaller-than-average for those of the species : calyces of P. physaloides tend also to be somewhat larger than those of P. orientalis. The P. orientalis calyx (on the Left) is from a cultivated plant brought into growth early in a domestic conservatory, while the P. physaloides calyx (on the Right) is from a wild plant encountered in fruit during a walking holiday in the Khovd aimag of Mongolia in 1989.
