Cloudina is famous for being one of only a few, very early fossil organisms that had a mineralized shell. It only occurs in ~uppermost Precambrian rocks (about 550 million years old), sometimes in high abundances. In the rock shown here, the dark gray, tubular structures are the Cloudina specimens. Cloudina shells consisted of a series of nested cones (<a href="http://palaeos.com/proterozoic/neoproterozoic/ediacaran/images/Cloudina.jpg" rel="noreferrer nofollow">palaeos.com/proterozoic/neoproterozoic/ediacaran/images/C...</a>). Preserved soft parts are unknown.
