Summary

Description

English: Statue of Simon Stevin at the Simon Stevinplein in Bruges -- detail. The statue was erected in 1847.

Simon Stevin (1548/49 – 1620) was a Flemish mathematician and engineer. He was active in a great many areas of science and engineering, both theoretical and practical. He emigrated to Holland in 1581 and became tutor to Prince Maurice at about 1590.

Stevin proved the law of the equilibrium on an inclined plane, using an ingenious and intuitive diagram, called clootcrans, showing a rope containing evenly spaced beads draped over an inclined plane.
