The sitter appears to be no more than 40, and the drawing almost undoubtedly from life, which would make the work before 1909. The work may now be in the public domain.

This image is used in Charles Aitken to identify the subject of the article and allow readers to gain an insight into his character through a visual depiction. This is a significant contributino to understanding. The image is used for the purpose of education and increasing knowledge. It is considered that there is no commercial harm to the copyright holder, who is unknown. It has not been possible to find any free alternative and none can be created as the subject is dead.
