DUQUESNOY, François
(b. 1597, Bruxelles, d. 1643, Livorno)
Cardinal Maurizio of Savoy
c. 1634
Marble
Galleria Sabauda, Turin
In the field of portrait sculpture Duquesnoy's achievements can be compared to those of Bernini. Like Bernini he tries to suggest in marble the texture and surface structure of features and clothing. Yet this work is more controlled and more stylised, as can be seen from examples such as the bust of Cardinal Maurizio of Savoy.
