Description
English: Captain Alex H. Mitchell (1840–1913), shown here circa 1902, was awarded the U.S. Medal of Honor for his gallantry during the American Civil War. While leading his men as captain of Company A, 150th Pennsylvania Infantry in the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia on May 12, 1864, he was wounded while capturing the enemy’s flag during a hand-to-hand encounter with the color-bearer of the 18th North Carolina Infantry (Confederate States Army). He was also awarded the Kearny Badge for his valor that day, an award which was presented to him on May 27, 1864 by Union Brigadier-General Daniel Sickles. Mitchell was also wounded in action while fighting with the 150th Pennsylvania in the Battle of Fair Oaks/Seven Pines (May 31, 1862), at Little Round Top during the Battle of Gettysburg (July 1863), and at Petersburg on June 16, 1864. A native of Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, he died in Harrisburg in 1913.
