Summary

Description
English: This Monument marks the site of the westernmost battle of the War of 1812 in what is now the State of Illinois. The Monument was dedicated in 1908 to the memory of American soldiers & two civilians who were killed after their boat ran aground on the island during a storm and Native Americans who had sided with the British in the War launched an attack. The boat was one of three taking supplies upriver to a fort. Following the attack the other two boats turned around and returned to St. Louis, solidifying the Great Warrior Black Hawk's hold on the area for another twenty years. The Monument is owned by the Mary Little Deere-Fort Armstrong Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and is located on a State of Illinois Historic Site. Overlooking the Mighty Mississippi River, time and the elements had taken their toll on the Monument which was literally falling apart. The DAR Chapter undertook a fundraising campaign several years ago to restore the Monument and in September of 2018 saw that much needed restoration work completed. A re-dedication ceremony will be held sometime in 2019.
