Nederlands: Negatief. Adathuizen, doorgaans gebouwd en bewoond door en het bezit van een grote groep verwanten, moesten de welstand van de 'extended family' laten zien. Zowel bij de Toba-Bataks als bij de Minangkabau werd dat onder meer gedaan door middel van zeer complexe en gedetailleerde houtsnijwerkpatronen die soms ook nog beschilderd waren. Hiervoor werden naast de balken ook de wanden gebruikt die doorgaans niet dragend waren. Aldus kreeg men wanden die wel iets van geklost kant weg hadden. Op de foto is nog een stukje ambachtelijk werk te zien, namelijk de pandan mat achter de familiegroep. Dat is echter vermoedelijk een artistieke ingreep van de fotograaf. (P. Boomgaard, 2001). English: Negative. Adathuizen, usually built and occupied by and possession of a large group of relatives, had the wealth of the "extended family" show. Both the Toba Batak and the Minangkabau were inter alia by means of highly complex and detailed carving patterns that were sometimes even painted. For this, besides the bars, the walls were used, usually not bearing. So they got a bit of lace walls were road side. On the picture is a piece of craft work on display, namely the pandan mat behind the family group. This is probably an artistic intervention of the photographer. (P. Orchard, 2001).
