Summary

Description

The plaza in the center of Hanga Roa at the north end of Av. Atamu Tekena, the main street, includes a memorial commemorating 9 September 1888. On that date, Easter Island’s then-king Atamu Tekena (the left bust) accepted a ‘Deed of Cession’ from Naval Captain Policarpo Toro (the right bust) giving Chile “full and entire sovereignty” over the island indefinitely. There continues to be controversy, however, over Atamu Tekena’s legitimacy as the king and whether the Rapa Nui translation of the Spanish document misleadingly merely offered “protection” and “friendship.”
