The priory of St John the Evangelist in Brecon dates from 1093 but was substantially rebuilt starting in 1210 so is largely Early English in appearance. The priory was dissolved in 1537 and became the parish church of Brecon until becoming the Cathedral of Swansea and Brecon in 1923. Remarkably a lot of the monastic buildings survived the reformation and now serve as the administrative buildings of the cathedral. Together with the walled close the collection is said to be one of the finest in Europe.
