Summary

Description

This is an interesting lighthouse. This is an onshore skeletal lighthouse with a hexagonal footprint. It was originally built in 1881 as the Delaware Breakwater Range Rear. That light was discontinued in 1918. It was disassembled in 1921 and relocated to Florida. In 1927, it was moved to Gasperilla Island, FL to be a rear range light there. Oddly, the completed tower was not put into service until 1932.

One other oddity about this lighthouse is the complete lack of watchroom below the lantern. Normally, a lighthouse has a small room below the lantern that would be used by the keeper during operation of the light to look out at the water. This light was tended by the keeper of the Boca Grande Lighthouse, which was 2 miles farther south on the island.
