Summary

Description
English: Portrait of the empress Helena and her Invention of the True Cross in a 9th century Byzantine manuscript.

Saint Helena, mother of Constantine the Great, was made Augusta by her son. According to Christian tradition, she made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and discovered in Jerusalem the original wooden crosses on which Jesus and the two thieves were crucified. The inventio (invention, discovery) of the True Cross was a popular subject in mediaeval legend.

Detail from a Greek manuscript dated 879-883 AD and containing the homilies of Gregory of Nazianzus, now in the National Library of France.
