c/n 36
Built 1947
The Bell 47B evolved from the Bell 30 and was the first helicopter to be certified by the U.S. Civil Aeronautics Authority. This was the 36th example built and in 1989 it set the worlds hovering record of 50 hours and 50 seconds. It last flew in December 2004, some 57 years after its first flight, making it the longest flying helicopter in history. It was then donated to the Smithsonian Institute and is seen on display at the Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center as part of the National Air and Space Museum.
