Most travelers are surprised to discover that Reykjavik is home to its very own botanical garden, but this surprise quickly turns to delight when they step inside Grasagarður Reykjavíkur. The gardens, which were founded in 1961 with just 200 species of native plants, are now home to more than 4,000 different kinds of plants from all over the world. Grasagarður Reykjavíkur is beautifully laid out, with dozens of footpaths weaving their way between the plants, together with numerous ponds. Each plant is marked with a sign explaining its origins, making the visit as much an education one as it is fun. Best time to come is during the summer, when many of the foreign plants will flower.
