Description

Diagram of British Mk IV Common Pointed cast steel shell for BL 9.2 inch naval gun. Image depicts shell stamped 1906.
Has narrow wider sections at each end called bands, which come into contact with gun barrel.
Length 35.1 inches, diameter 9.165 inches at bands.
The shell is painted black, with a white band around the head denoting steel projectile, red band denoting filled.
Filled with approximately 32 lb "P" mixture (gunpowder) contained within a dowlas burster bag together with 6 7-dram primers of fine-grain powder. The purpose of enclosing the explosive in a bag is to prevent spontaneous explosion due to the shock from discharge and friction against the shell wall.
Has threaded socket for lifting eye-bolt at centre of gravity.
Weight empty approximately 347 1/2 lb, filled & fuzed 380 lb.


Uses No. 11 large base percussion fuze.
