Français : C'est à Ath que Vauban construit sa première enceinte urbaine, aprs la prise de la ville par Turenne et son attribution à la France en 1668. Dès cette même année, il réalise une fortification octogonale régulière à huit bastions, complétée de tenailles et demi-lunes. Rendues aux Espagnoles en 1678 (traité d'Aix-la-Chapelle), la ville est reprise par Vauban en 1697 mais retourne trois mois plus tard aux Espagnols (traité de Ryswick). En 1706, elle est prise par Marlborough au détriment des Français et des Espagnols. Elle va à l'Autriche en 1715 (traité de la Barrière). En 1745 elle est prise par les Français qui démantèlent les fortifications. Les Hollandais les remettent en œuvre dès 1816 et les renforcent par un fortin extérieur établi sur le Mont Feron. Le site du Pont à la Herse est constitué d'une porte d'eau qui livre passage à la Dendre. Il est voisin de l'ancien bastion de la Flandre qui a été entouré par le boulevard, mais dont il reste le site de la "Bosse Rousseau".
