Summary edit

Movie screenshot of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in the dance routine "Cheek to Cheek" from Top Hat (1935).

Source edit

It is reproduced in Hannah Hyam: Fred and Ginger - The Astaire-Rogers Partnership 1934-1938, Pen Press Publications, Brighton, 2007. ISBN 978-1-905621-96-5, p.206 with the following caption: "The stunning climax of 'Cheek to Cheek', the deepest of Rogers' backbends reflecting her total submission to Astaire's seduction."

Fair use rationale in Top Hat edit

  • It is used to support detailed critical commentary in the "Cheek to Cheek" subsection of the section "Musical numbers and choreography" in the article Top Hat, where it illustrates the climactic moment from the dance routine under discussion. It has been used for precisely this purpose in a published critical study (see Source).
  • The routine and the photograph depicting it is notable in being the most famous of all the filmed partnered dances of Astaire and Rogers.
  • Although the original trailer of Top Hat exists, and may be in the public domain, it contains no footage of this dance sequence. A thorough search of the Astaire bibliography has revealed no public domain materials which could substitute for this image, nor have references to the possible existence of such material been located.
  • The resolution of the image has been deliberately degraded for use on Wikipedia.
