Description |
The painting was initially attributed to the renowned landscapist Giuseppe Bisi on the strength of a spurious signature, and subsequently attributed to Fulvia Bisi, his daughter and pupil. From 1842 on, this painter was distinguished for her regular participation in the annual Brera exhibitions with a vast repertoire of views of Milan and later Lombard and Ticino landscapes. The studies carried out when the Collection was first catalogued suggested a date for the canvas around 1865, because of stylistic similarities to A Road in the Woods (Milan, Brera Academy), whose handling consists of small rapid touches of colour in a naturalistic manner. However, it is not possible to confirm the authorship of the painting with certainty. Its mest pictorial quality, scant characterisation of the figures and tight rhythmic definition of the perspectival planes are not typical of the artist’s mature works. In fact, the use of broken brushstrokes and a refined rendering of light distinguish her artistic maturity that culminated with the execution of The Whirlwind (Milan, Galleria d’Arte Moderna), a masterly and intense interpretation of the Lombard landscape. |
