Notes Figural studies rendered in black chalk and white heightening are a defining trait of Van Dyck’s draftsmanship following his return from Italy. Like the study for a Crucifixion also in the BM (inv. Gg,2.235), Van Dyck here paid great attention to anatomy. The dead body of Christ is elegantly constructed and may have been studied from a live model [1]
