At the time of her marriage, her husband was part of the local militia, and a successful colonial official who owned substantial land in the area of Albany, New York. This miniature, likely painted before her move to Canada in 1777, and those of Sir William Johnson and Christian Daniel Claus were acquired from a descendant of the Claus family. / La fille de William Johnson et de Catherine Weissenberg, Ann (1740-1801) -- connue sous le nom de Nancy -- , épousa Christian Daniel Claus le 13 avril 1762. À l'époque de leur mariage, Christian Daniel Claus faisait partie de la milice locale et était un fonctionnaire prospère dans les colonies; il possédait de vastes terres dans la région d'Albany (New York).
