Summary

Description
English: This diorama shows Anishanabe people mining copper near Lake Superior between 3000 BCE and 1500 CE.
  • By 3000 BCE and continuing until at least 1500 CE, Native Americans mined naturally-occuring copper on Lake Superior's Isle Royale and the Keweenaw Peninsula. Ancient copper miners used large stones as tools to crush the rock surrounding the natural deposits. Ancient copper mining pits are still visible today.
