riorsurface of the cylinder. The area of the cross section of thiseports varies in such a manner that, although the piston has achanging velocity, a constant pressure is maintained on thepistonhead. The return to the firing piston is effected bymeans of a recoil-spring. The guns are manufactured as 1-pdrs. high-power light,3-pdrs., 6-pdrs., 12-pdrs., 9-pdrs., :!,-„ in., 14 pdrs., ami33 pdrs.; 70 and 100-pdrs. have also been designed. The guns ctew consists of three men : one has his shoulderagainst the stock, and docs the aiming and tiring ; the seconddoes the loading, and the third handles the ammunition andserves the second man. In trials which have been made with the 6-pd. guns aninitial velocity of 1,870 ft. per second has been obtained.Rapidity of the firing when the gun is used, regardless of aim,has been 35 shots per minute. The bands extend well around on the side andsustain the whole force of the discharge without putting anystrain whatever upon the bolt. The refilling is an increasing twist on a curve connectingthe initial and final angles of a semi-cubical parabola. Thesights are capable of rapid changing of setting with but onehand. The rear sight has double cross wires and the frontsight single wires. The advantage of this arrangement isthat the gun can be pointed almost as accurately as witha telescopic sight and that there is a clear field about thetrigger. The cross-bar of the sights is graduated in spacingrepresenting 10 minutes of a horizontal arc. This has beendone mainly to assist the officers commanding the guns, whoare able thereby to designate the amount the eye-piece is to bemoved. The space on the sight-bar represents 100 )ds. inrange when using the service charge. The gun is mounted on two general types—the recoil
