The runway shown in this photo is the first of three that was built during 1943 on Amchitka.
This runway was titled "Fox" meaning that it was for use only for fighter ("Fox") aircraft.
The other two runways, were "Baker" (at 10,000' in length, this was built for use by B-29
aircraft, thus the 'bomber' runway. The third, some distance away, was the "Charlie" run-
way, and was for all other type aircraft. After the war, only Baker remained in use (I know,
I was there.)
