Obraz należy do grupy portretów tradycyjnie uważanych za nabyte przez Stanisława Augusta w 1764 wraz z dobrami Ujazdów od Kaspra Lubomirskiego (nt. serii zob. nr kat. 48). […] Sieniawski był skoligacony z Lubomirskimi poprzez zawarte w 1687 małżeństwo z Elżbietą, córką Stanisława Herakliusza Lubomirskiego, od 1720 właścicielką Wilanowa. […] Adam Mikołaj Sieniawski (1666–1726) był stronnikiem Augusta II, który w 1702 mianował go hetmanem polnym, a w 1706 hetmanem wielkim koronnym. Sieniawski był jednym z najważniejszych przywódców konfederacji sandomierskiej zawiązanej przeciwko Stanisławowi Leszczyńskiemu, również pretendującemu do polskiej korony. W inwentarzach galerii Stanisława Augusta obraz odnotowany był bez określenia autora, podobnie jak w opracowaniach XIX-wiecznych. […] Obraz, lub też jego pierwowzór, powstał w 2. dekadzie XVIII w., niedługo po otrzymaniu przez Sieniawskiego Orderu Orła Białego w 1713–14 […], którego wstęga i gwiazda są widoczne na portrecie.
