Summary

Description Although as an agnostic temples and places of worship are not my thing, this is something my guide Ibrahim assured me that I have to see- the Baku Ateshgah, often called the Fire Temple of Baku. This is a sweeping piazza and entrance circulating area for the temple. Both Hindus and Zoroastrians (from Iran) worship fire, and considered this place very sacred due to the naturally occuring fire from the earth. (due to gas reserves basically). The two faiths came in along the Silk Road and finding something of common interest, are said to have lived together in perfect harmony. Both are great friends even in today's world and some cities in India still have a fire temple. Zoroastrians living in India are called Parsis. The Ateshgah (also spelt Atashgah) is a castle-like religious temple in Surakhani, a suburb in Baku, Azerbaijan. Based on Persian and Indian inscriptions, the temple was used as a Hindu and Zoroastrian place of worship. (Gobustan, Azerbaijan, Sept. 2017)
