The USN Good Conduct Medal is the third oldest continuously awarded medal in the United States. The Type III medal was first authorized in 1884 and remained in use until the 1950's.
The medallion remained the same as the Type II medal but the regulations governing issuance changed and the ribbon color changed to red from red, white, and blue. The medallion is an adaptation of the seal of the Bureau of Equipment and Recruiting.
The reverse of the medal is engraved, " C.S.C/ No 21730/George Bradley/USS Rhode Island/Nov 19 1911." Hand engraving on the reverse of the medal continued until 1941.
