English: Brig. Gen. Fred Borum presents the Air Medal to Lt. Elsie Ott, who was the first woman to receive the Air Medal. (U.S. Air Force photo) Note: General Borum presented the Air Medal to Lt. Elsie Ott, the first woman to receive the honor, following the first intercontinental air evacuation flight in January 1943 during which Lt. Ott served as a flight nurse (Air evacuations helped to advance medical care). The ceremony was held in 1943 at Bowman Field, KY, where the School of Air Evacuation was establishee in November 1942.
