Summary

Description
English: Female genital mutilation (FGM), also known as female genital cutting and female circumcision, is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as "all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons".

This map shows the % of girls and women aged 15-49 years who have undergone FGM/C.

Data source: UNICEF (2013), United Nations Children’s Fund, Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting - A statistical overview and exploration of the dynamics of change, New York.

The FGM/C data table is mirrored at World DataBank, Gender Statistics: FGM data at World Databank.

Note: Gray colored countries include those where FGM/C is not concentrated, according to UNICEF. On page 23, the 2013 UNICEF report states that while no nationally representative data on FGM/C are available, evidence suggests it is practiced in pockets of Europe and North America by immigrants from countries where FGM is common, as well as in parts of Jordan, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and Malaysia.
