Food industry trade association The New Jersey Food Council (NJFC) is a 501(c)6 nonprofit.[1] that represents more than 1,400 retail food stores, wholesalers, manufacturers and suppliers in the Garden State[2].
NJFC was founded in 1969. Its mission includes lobbying lawmakers and regulators; educating government officials and the public; developing strategic alliances, and enhancing the industry’s overall image[3].
Government Relations and PAC
editNJFC has advocated on issues related to bottle bills, mandatory item-pricing, store-hour limitations, energy-crisis regulations, organized retail crime, meat labeling, packaging policies, and online working papers for minors, among others. In 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court sided with NJFC and denied New Jersey’s final appeal of a state law on gift cards, which had required gift card issuers to transfer to the state for safekeeping any remaining gift-card value after a two-year dormancy period[4].
NJFC also supported New Jersey’s ban on single-use paper and plastic shopping bags, enacted May 4, 2022.[5] Advocates of the measure say it will remove 8.4 billion single-use bags each year from the waste stream[6].
Trenton-based NJFC’s political action committee—the Food Council Committee for Good Government— recognizes government officials and community leaders for their efforts to support grocery retailing[7] and do things like fight hunger[8], reduce litter, such as the 2024 Reusable Bag Redistribution Project coordinated by NJFC and others[9], and advocate for lower business taxes[10]

editNJFC President & CEO Linda Doherty has served in leadership roles for the organization for more than 30 years and as president since 2003[11].
Community Engagement and Annual Events
editPermanent NJFC committees focus on subjects such as WIC/EBT, energy, omnichannel commerce, scholarship-creation, the environment, food safety/quality, governance, government affairs, healthcare, labor issues, loss-prevention/organized retail theft, safety/risk management, tax policy, trade relations, and weights and measures.[12]
NJFC events include the Trade Relations Conference[13], Annual Golf Outing, Good Government Breakfast[14], Loss Prevention Conference[15], Holiday Reception[16], Night of Distinction[17], and Annual Membership Meeting.[18]
