The Society of Daughters of Mary Immaculate and Collaborators[1]Official website (Latin: Societas Filiarum Mariae Immaculatae et Collaborators; abbreviated DMI) is a female religious institute was founded by Fr. Jesuadimai Emmanuel Arul Raj[2][3] (a.k.a Fr J.E Arulraj). Fr. J.E. Since 2024, the Generalate of the society has been located in Rome, Italy. Previously, the Generalate was in Ghaziabad, in the Diocese of Meerut, under the guidance of Archbishop Francis Kalist, who was then the Bishop of Meerut and is now the Archbishop of Pondicherry-Cuddalore.

History

edit

The Society of Daughters of Mary Immaculate (DMI) was founded[12][13] on January 28, 1984, in Pandravedu[14], India, by Fr. Jesuadimai Emmanuel Arul Raj[2]. Initially formed to address local needs in education and healthcare, the congregation then expanded its mission to include various humanitarian and social justice initiatives.[15] The society has since established educational institutions, healthcare centers, and social services in various parts of India and beyond.

Global Presence and Activities

edit

The DMI focuses on a wide range of activities including education, humanitarian efforts[16], healthcare[17][18], and social justice across ten countries:India[19], Tanzania[16], Zambia[20], Malawi[21], Ethiopia[18], South Sudan[22][23][17], Italy, Central African Republic[24], Papua New Guinea[25][26], and Kenya[27].

For example, in South Sudan, DMI established a network of schools and healthcare facilities aimed at improving the lives of rural communities. Their work has been recognized by local and international organizations, including awards for educational excellence.[5][16][17][23][22]

Notable Projects and Impact

edit

DMI is involved in various notable projects, including:

Recognition and Criticism

edit

DMI has been recognized for its contributions to education and social services, receiving accolades from both church and secular organizations.[4] However, like many religious organizations, it has also faced criticism and challenges, particularly in balancing its religious mission with the socio-political dynamics of the regions it serves. Over the years, the Society of Daughters of Mary Immaculate (DMI) has faced several controversies and criticisms, particularly related to its educational institutions in Africa and India.

  • Labor Disputes: In 2020, DMI St John the Baptist University in Malawi came under scrutiny for controversially sacking 10 lecturers who were protesting against a COVID-19-related pay cut[69][70][71]. The incident sparked significant media coverage and raised questions about the university's labor practices .
  • Student Safety and Institutional Response: The DMI St. John the Baptist University in Malawi faced severe criticism after a student was killed in an altercation with a villager. The university's response, which included closing the campus, was widely reported and criticized for failing to ensure student safety [72]. Similarly, in India, an engineering student at a DMI College of Engineering in Chennai committed suicide in 2010, leading to public outcry and criticism of the institution's handling of student welfare[73][74][75].
  • Institutional Quality and Accreditation Issues: DMI has also faced challenges regarding the quality and accreditation of its institutions. In 2015, two DMI-run colleges at Songea and Makambako in Tanzania were declared unfit by Tanzania Commission for Universities, affecting over 2,000 students.[76][77][78] The situation led to unrest among students, further complicating the university’s reputation in the region . Additionally, in 2022, the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) in Malawi suspended the education program at DMI’s university due to concerns about the quality of education[79].

These incidents highlight some of the challenges DMI faces in managing its widespread educational network. While the society has made significant contributions to education and social services, these controversies indicate areas where improvements are needed.
