Pack.PNG (named in the game files and normally formatted as 'pack.png') is a cropped screenshot PNG image found in the 2011 sandbox game Minecraft. It has been dubbed by many as the 'most iconic image in Minecraft.[citation needed]

On 5 September 2020, after 8 months of searching, the seed of the world the screenshot was taken on was found.[1][2]

Image

edit

The 128x128 image[1][3][4] contains a waterfront with a pig swimming, a sandy beach, a hill with a waterfall in the front with trees spread across the terrain.[5][6] The sky is a light blue color with clouds, indicating daytime.

Usage

edit

The image was first introduced and implemented in Alpha 1.2.2a[4] when texture packs were first introduced and served as the default texture pack icon until Release 1.13.2.[1][7][8] It is currently used as the default Minecraft server icon,[1][5] albeit in a greyscale variant.[7][8]

edit

The search started on 14 January 2020, when YouTuber SalC1 uploaded a video named 'The Mystery of the Minecraft pack.png file'.[9][10] In the video, he details how he attempted to find the seed of the infamous image by looking into Google search results and Minecraft forum websites.

After the video was published, SalC1 contacted developers of Mojang Studios on Twitter if they had any information on the image file. Markus Persson, the creator of Minecraft responded, being unable to answer the question. Dinnerbone also responded with a potential seed, but the seed was searched and was considered invalid.[6]

A recreation began in order to reverse engineer the seed to the world.[11]

On September 5, 2020, the seed was found at around 5am in the morning, revealing it to be 3257840388504953787, ending a 8 month search.[11] Interestingly, the seed was reportedly in the last 5% of seeds searched.[7]

Reverse engineering the seed

edit

Since the image was so low quality in the game files, AI upscaling by using thousands of Minecraft screenshots was used, resulting in a more crisp 512x512 image. From then, a recreation of the image was beginning construction in order to get the location of where the screenshot was taken. They managed to find the X coordinate by using the pattern in the clouds.[11][12] Water orientation was used to find the direction of where the image was taken.

A program called 'BOINC' was then used to file down the potential seeds to 700,000. The candidate seeds were then filtered through another program to check if they matched the height of the terrain of the recreation, resulting in the seed being found.[8][11][12]

Legacy

edit

After the project's end, many more projects branched off in light of inspiration of finding the image.

The famous Herobrine world seed, where the first sighting of the famous phemononom, was found.[13]
