SNL "Charmin Bears" Sketch Controversy

edit

On July 14th, 2022, Joel Haver published the "Toilet Paper Bears" comedy sketch on his YouTube channel. The video depicts a dispute between the Charmin Bears family, in which the son confronts his father in his dream to be a dancer, to his fathers disappointment, describing his dream as a "one-ply kind of thought" and adding "wiping your butt is one of best things you can do as a bear."[7][8]

In October of 2022, Saturday Night Live aired the "Charmin Bears" sketch, bearing striking similarities between Haver's original sketch. Notably, the basic premise of the sketches were nearly identical (a young bear confronts his father is his dream to be a dancer), in both videos the bears are colored blue, the father wears glasses and the child bears no accessories, and the father emphasizes the importance of the Charmin Bear lifestyle (defecating into toilet paper). [9][7]

Later that month, Haver published his video entitled "SNL stole my video" to widespread media attention.[10][11][12] Despite the reproachful title, he went on to attribute the similarities to parallel thinking and expressing that he was not personally bothered by the sketch, though he added "If I still was a smaller creator, which I was for a long time, I could see it rubbing me the wrong way."[13] [11]

Following the release of his video, Saturday Night Live removed the Charmin Bears sketch from their website.[9] The video is no longer found on any major streaming platforms.
