Janelle Stelson (born May 27, 1960) is an American journalist and politician. She is running for Pennsylvania's 10th congressional district against Scott Perry, running as a member of the Democratic Party. She is a resident of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.[1]
Early life and education
editStelson was born in Fairbanks, Alaska and grew up in Washington state. She is the daughter of a state trooper/teacher and a Navy shipyard receptionist. The oldest of four girls, she graduated from the University of Puget Sound with a BA in politics and government. She also studied international politics and German at the Austro-American Institute in Vienna, Austria.[2] She began her professional career writing speeches at the Embassy of Egypt in Washington, DC.
Journalism career
editStelson, an Associated Press and Emmy award winning journalist,[3][4] began her journalism career it WHTM-TV in Harrisburg. She then worked for WPLG-TV in Miami where she covered topics including hurricanes and Haitian riots. She was a longtime anchor for WGAL-TV in south-central Pennsylvania, joining WGAL in 1997.[5][2] In 2023 she left her position as evening news anchor after 26 years at the station and 40 years as a journalist.[6]
Political career
editStelson won the 2024 Democratic primary for Pennsylvania's 10th congressional district with 44% of the vote in a six-candidate race.[7] She is now running against incumbent Scott Perry[5][8]
