A Prestigious government institution, established during the year 1965 .A total of 75 students were admitted for the MBBS ( Bachelor of Medicine & Surgery ) course for the academic year 1965-66 . In July 1966, the first batch of second year MBBS students started attending the classes in the then newly constructed Anatomy Block. Other departments like Pharmacology, Pathology, Microbiology and Social & Preventive Medicine started functioning in the subsequent years, and the District Headquarters Hospital was converted to Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital. At present , the institution has 250 MBBS seats , 144 MD/MS seats in various broad specialties , 31 DM/MCh seats in various super specialty branches of medical and surgical field .
The college was affiliated to the Madurai Kamaraj University consequent to its inception in 1967 till the newly formed The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Guindy, Chennai in 1988.
It is the only government institution in India, which has 2 DM Virology super specialty seats among the total seats of 4 all over India.
A total of only 4 seats in the super specialty branch of DM Virology , are available till date all over India. Among the 4 seats, 2 seats are available in the Christian Medical College in Vellore and 2 seats are available in the Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital in Tirunelveli. The admission is through NEET Super Specialty examination that is held once a year and its purely meritorious.
