The BNB token, short for "Build and Build," is the native cryptocurrency of the BNB Chain ecosystem. It serves multiple functions, including acting as a transactional currency similar to gas on Ethereum. Holding BNB tokens provides users with the ability to participate in the decentralized governance of BNB Chain.
Binance Coin was established in 2017,[3] and the Binance Smart Chain was introduced three years later during the DeFi [4]. The BNB token has continuously evolved since its debut. Initially, created as an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum network in 2017, [5] and was an Ethereum fork, [6] it quickly switched over to the then Binance Chain and fueled the establishment of the early Binance Smart Chain network, which was officially launched in September 2020 [7].
Binance Smart Chain later merged with the older Binance Chain and was rebranded into BNB chain.[8][9] BNB Chain operates using "Proof of Staked Authority", a combination of proof of stake and proof of authority. As of 2023, Binance Coin was the cryptocurrency with the fourth highest market capitalization. [10]
BNB underwent a transformation to embrace decentralization on its chain, granting substantial decision-making power to BNB holders through voting mechanisms.[11] This shift emphasizes the community's active involvement and influence over the platform's evolution.

BNB Beacon Chain: Launched April 2019,[12] the BNB Beacon Chain serves as the staking and governance layer of the BNB ecosystem. It allows participants to stake their tokens for rewards and actively participate in the decentralized decision-making process that shapes the future of the BNB Chain.
BNB Smart Chain (BSC): BSC is an Ethereum Virtual Machine(EVM)-compatible blockchain within the BNB ecosystem.[13] It facilitates the creation of decentralized applications and smart contracts, bringing programmability and interoperability to the network.
zkBNB: zkBNB is an infrastructure built on the zk-Rollup architecture. It caters to developers by providing them with tools to create large-scale applications on the BSC platform, focusing on higher throughput and significantly reduced or zero transaction fees.[14]
opBNB: The opBNB network functions as a Layer 2 scaling solution for BSC, leveraging the Optimism opStack technology. It aimed to enhance the efficiency and scalability of the BNB Smart Chain, contributing to improved user experience. The testnet was released in Q2 2023.[15]
BNB Greenfield: BNB Greenfield introduces a novel paradigm for data in the era of Web3.[16] It aimed to empower users and participants within the BNB Chain ecosystem to take ownership of data, its usage, and monetization.
